Historical Background

The Memel Medal was instituted on March 22, 1939, and awarded to individuals who participated in the reintegration of the Memel Territory (today: Klaipėda, Lithuania) into the German Reich or who resided there. The Memel Territory had been placed under League of Nations mandate after the First World War. The medal is one of the so-called Flower War Medals and is highly sought after by collectors.
