About this unit

The Panzergrenadier-Division "Feldherrnhalle" was formed on June 20, 1943, in Southern France by renaming and reorganizing the 60th Infantry Division. A large proportion of the recruits had previously been members of the SA or had completed a training course in one of the twelve Stormtroop Battalions – the name "Feldherrnhalle" originated from Infantry Regiment 271 or its III Battalion.

During its formation, the division carried out security duties in the Nîmes–Montpellier area. In early September 1943, it participated in disarming the 8th Italian Army. In late October 1943, the division moved to Northern France (Arras–Doullens area), and in early December 1943, to the Eastern Front, where it was deployed for defensive battles in the Vitebsk area as part of the 3rd Panzer Army. Badges of this division are among the most sought-after Army unit badges of the Second World War.
