The 29th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (Italian No. 1) was one of the few Waffen-SS divisions formed from foreign volunteers of a former Axis partner. After the Armistice of Italy on September 8, 1943 and the German occupation of Northern Italy, the SS recruited Italian volunteers who wished to continue fighting alongside Germany. The division was established in 1943/44 and primarily deployed in Northern Italy for partisan warfare and security duties. As one of the late-formed and numerically weak volunteer divisions of the Waffen-SS, the 29th Division is among the rarer and lesser-known units – its division badges are accordingly sought after by Waffen-SS and Italian Campaign collectors.
