About this unit

The 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Estonian) was the largest and most combat-effective of the Baltic Waffen-SS divisions. It received its official name on May 26, 1944, and was primarily recruited from Estonian volunteers fighting against Soviet occupation – for many Estonians, joining the Waffen-SS was an act of national resistance against the USSR. The division primarily fought on the Eastern Front in Estonia and Latvia and was involved in the defense of the Narva Line (1944) – one of the fiercest defensive battles on the northern front. Divisional insignia of the Estonian Waffen-SS are internationally highly sought after by Baltic, Scandinavian, and Eastern Front collectors.
