The Friedrich-August-Cross (FA-Cross for short) was the most significant bravery award of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg in World War I – instituted in 1914 by Grand Duke Friedrich August II of Oldenburg. It was awarded in two classes: The 1st Class was the higher award and was worn on the chest, the 2nd Class on a ribbon. The FA-Cross was awarded to Oldenburg soldiers as well as members of allied units for exceptional bravery in the face of the enemy. Medals from the German individual states from World War I are among the rarest and most specialized collecting areas of German militaria – each state had its own award systems, which are highly sought after by specialist collectors internationally today.
