The German Seapost was the official postal service of the German Empire on ocean-going vessels – mail was sorted onboard passenger and cargo ships and marked with special Seapost postmarks documenting the ship's name, route, and date. The Hamburg–West Africa route connected the German Empire with its West African colonies – including Cameroon, Togo, and German South West Africa. The 1896 postmark dates from the heyday of German colonialism under Kaiser Wilhelm II. German Seapost postmarks from the West Africa route from the 19th century are among the rarest and most sought-after pieces of maritime philately and colonial philately – a niche collecting area with growing international demand. Also available: Colonial Post Kiautschou 1901 (Item No. 32.472) and Zeppelin Postmark Series (Item Nos. 32.474, 33.206–33.208).
