The 25th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS "Hunyadi" was formed by order of November 2, 1944 in Hungary – incorporating the Hungarian recruit depot and Hungarian volunteers. Named after the Hungarian national hero János Hunyadi (c. 1406–1456), Regent of Hungary and defender against Ottoman expansion.
The division was assembled at the Neuhammer military training area. Already in January 1945, it became involved in the fighting in Silesia, where it was deployed in several battle groups. The remnants of the division were then gathered in the area of Roth near Nuremberg and finally fell into American captivity in the Salzkammergut. The Hungarian members were subsequently handed over to Hungary. Badges of this rare Hungarian Waffen-SS division are highly sought after by specialist collectors.
