Historical Background

Herbert Otto Kuppisch was an experienced U-boat commander of the Kriegsmarine and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. He died on August 27, 1943, in the Sargasso Sea – one of the most remote theaters of war in the Battle of the Atlantic. Documents and postcards of fallen Knight's Cross recipients are among the most sought-after items on the militaria collector's market and are rarely found in good condition.
