About the German Colonial Badge and the "Elephant Order"

The German Colonial Badge – affectionately called the "Elephant Order" by collectors, as it bears an elephant as its central motif – was instituted in 1922 by the Ministry of Reconstruction of the Weimar Republic. It honored all German soldiers, officials, and civilians who had served in the German colonies (German East Africa, Cameroon, Togo, German Southwest Africa, German New Guinea, Kiautschou) or in the interest of the colonies during World War I – including the legendary Schutztruppen under General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck in German East Africa. The Colonial Badge is one of the most well-known and sought-after German colonial awards – an absolute highlight for collectors of German colonial history, pre-1933 militaria, and the Weimar Republic. Original marked examples are rare on the collector's market. Also available: Kaiser Wilhelm Order German Colonies (Art. No. 32.925) and other pre-1933 orders in our assortment.
