About this Unit

The 6th SS Mountain Division "Nord" was a division of the Waffen-SS, formed by order of Heinrich Himmler on January 15, 1942 as SS-Kampfgruppe Nord from Waffen-SS units stationed in Norway. As a mountain division, it was specially trained for combat in arctic and mountainous terrain and was mainly deployed in Finland and Lapland on the Northern Front – one of the harshest and most climatically extreme theaters of war in World War II. Towards the end of the war, the division fought in Germany, where it surrendered in May 1945. Division patches of the 6th SS Mountain Division "Nord" are among the sought-after Waffen-SS special unit patches and are highly desired by mountain troop and Northern Front collectors.
